Cleaning Your Baitcasting Reels

Probably one of the most neglected items in the sport of bass fishing is proper preventive maintenance of your baitcasting reels. Lack of cleaning your reels can lead to frustration on the water involving lockups, noisy drive trains, line balling up on one side of the spool and many other things. Here are a few tips to help get you going on cleaning them.

1- Disassemble your reel and remove your worm gear and pawl. Thoroughly clean the worm gear grooves with a wooden toothpick using an eyeloop to get all debris out of them. Check your pawl for extreme wear and replace if necessary.

Cleaning of the level wind system (worm gear and pawl) will prevent it from hanging up on one side of the reel and having the line ball up on one side. Use a light oil on the worm gear upon reassembly.

2- Pull your side plate off normally using the thumb screws provided. Remove the spool which will expose the bearings. Use a light oil to lubricate all bearing points. This will keep your reel casting smoothly and allow maximum casting distance.

3- With your side plate off observe the gears. Lubricate the exposed gear points with a reel lube grease. This will prevent gear train noise on retrieval.

4- After completion of all the lubrication make sure your wipe down and remove any built up dirt especially around the spool holes. Any dirt left wear the spool comes close to the reels body can create friction points.

Reel maintenance can lead to real satisfaction on the water when your reel feels silky smooth and performs well. So the next time it's windy and raining and your stuck in the house, try cleaning your baitcasters so ready for your next bass fishing trip.

Until next time, Tight Lines.

Finding Spawning Bass

Tip of the Week
Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 12/21/09: Finding Early Spawning Bass

Bass in Florida can spawn as early as November and new waves of bedding fish can continue well into April. Typically the heaviest spawn is from late February through the beginning of April but savvy fishermen can find them earlier if the weather conditions prevail.

The first sign of an incoming spawning period includes a prolonged warming period after several heavy cold fronts have moved through. This period usually means anywhere from 5 to 7 days of consistently warm weather usually near 70 for the highs. This induces the males to set up beds in their favorite spawning areas and females soon to follow.

If the weather continues as described then start searching for good spawning areas with cover. Typically sandy bottoms near deeper water such as canal edges can be the ticket for early spawners. These areas offer the bass the chance to leave the spawning grounds quickly and move to deeper water if the water temperature dramatically drops. Look for pads and grass along these canal or slow moving river banks and watch for bright sandy areas within this cover. These bright sandy patches are ideal spots or created spots for the largemouth bass beds.

Another area to search for early spawners is either northeast or northwest corners of the lake that offers cover. These areas often warm the earliest in the winter months which induces the spawn much earlier. Sandy bottoms and grass/pad cover in this area will be the preferred cover.

The biggest problem of finding these fish is that they can be severely effected by an incoming cold front. So if you are preparing for a tournament be sure to find fish in deeper water as well in case a front knocks these fish off the beds.

So the next time you are fishing late December, January and early February don't leave out the chance for finding those heavy bedding bass or you just may miss that fish of a lifetime Article courtesy of Florida Bass Fishing Reports

Fishing Report for Aug 24th 2009

Monday is normally the day most people dread because it starts a new work week. I am just as guilty as the next for hating Mondays. Yesterday however was a really great Monday,I didn't have to work so I grab a pole and headed to the creek. Stewart Creek in Smyrna Tn,the Largemouth Bass moved into the creek following schools of Shad. Incredible display of bass working the top of the water. I caught several nice bass on spinnerbaits in a shad color. Topwater bite is good but wasn't the best bite. The best bite was the spinnerbait. The next time you are in the Smyrna area try fishing Stewart Creek for Largemouth Bass so real nice bass are hiding in this underfished beauty.

Bass Fishing with an old stand by Lure

In today's fishing circle there are a record number of lures to choose from. Most are great lures, but some times when it's hot and the fishing can be tough a fisherman needs to return to an old stand by . The Original Rapala,I used an F-11 today to catch 4 nice bass out of Stewart Creek. The Rapala doesn't have rattle's it doesn't suspend it just catches fish. When you get stumped on what to try tie on an original Rapala and have some fun.

Tough Economy Try Buying used Lures

In today's economy buying used bass fishing lures only makes sense. Why pay new price for some lures when a quality used one will do the trick. The bass don't know the difference between new and used. When buying used lures you will want to change the hooks before using them. Most used lures will have dull or rusty hooks. Most Ebay sellers will have some used lures listed ,don't be afraid of trying some of these treasures you never know when Ole Bucket Mouth might bite. Tight Lines everyone and remember to check my Ebay Store Music City Superstore for some quality used lures.

Norman Lures

Bill Norman created alot of top quality crankbaits in his life the Deep Baby N my personal favorite, the DD-22 ( for the deep diving crankbaiter)
the middle N to name a few. All Norman lures are of top quality and preform just as well and even better than several more expensive lures. When fishing a crankbait it isn't always about cranking sometimes it helps to pause the lure and pull it .Then crank in the slack line alot of hits will come when you pull the lure and let it sit while you reel up the slack.
